This will happen, especially if you're not paying attention to what keys you are pressing or if you accidentally press too many at once.

If it disappears, hit the TAB or ESC or F10 keys and it will come back. Pounding repeatedly on these three keys randomly in a panic seems to be the best way to get the HUD back.
