User Files - Test Without Custom Content
Once you have your Neighborhoods backed up and your Downloads and SavedSims folders moved, it's time to load the game and see if the problem you were having is still there.
Run Sims 2
This step is pretty self-explanatory. Load the game using the desktop icon, or put the disk in and let the game autorun. Without your Downloads and SavedSims folders in place, it should load pretty quickly.
Recreate the Problem
Once the game is fully loaded, try to recreate the problem you were having before.
For example, if you had problems with sims "jumping" or resetting out of the hot tub when you had a second sim try to join them, load the lot you had sims hot tubbing on and try to get one sim in, and a second sim to join.
If you had pets sinking into the floor, load the lot with the pets and see if they're still sinking.
If Create a Sim/Create a Family was crashing, try to load it and see if it works without your custom content.
... etc. Whatever was happening that was a problem before, try to set up the same situation and see if you can get the problem to happen again, and see how it goes.
No Problem
If you the game works fine without your custom content and the problem doesn't persist without it, then the problem is likely within one of the two folders you removed - Downloads or SavedSims.
If that is the case, then it's time to narrow down where the problem within those folders might be... Go to: Problem Custom Content.
Problem Persists
If you still have the problem without your custom content, then it's time to remove all your other user files to see if the problem is in there. Go to: Remove All User Files.
