Game Help: Homecrafter

This article is for help and support relating to technical issues with The Sims 2 Homecrafter. If you are looking for tutorials on using Homecrafter to create content, see Tutorials:Homecrafter Tutorials.

Debug

Here are three simple things to try that generally fix most Homecrafter issues. For all issues with Homecrafter, try the following in order. Try starting Homecrafter after you complete each step. That way, you can isolate the problem, and try that solution first if you ever have the problem again.

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Try deleting your temporary cache files, especially if Homecrafter just never comes up when you try to run it.
  3. Try removing your user files. Certain hacked/modded floors can cause Homecrafter to crash.

Reinstall

If the above three attempted fixes fail, or this has just started happening after installing a new expansion (especially Pets), try reinstalling Homecrafter:

  1. First, go to Start - Settings - Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs and remove Homecrafter.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Then, download a fresh copy of Homecrafter from EA.
  4. Install the new copy.
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. Try to run Homecrafter.

MAKE SURE you reboot when it tells you to above. That's a critical step, and if you miss it, it likely will not work.

If all else fails

If all of the above fail, you could try running Homecrafter from an older executable, which has been found to work.

  1. First, uninstall Homecrafter from your PC, this will get rid of any error files you have
  2. Download the Homecrafter Program from EA here.
  3. Install it, but don't try to run it
  4. Now download this homecrafter.exe here and unzip to your desktop. Don't do anything with this yet.
  5. Go to Start\My Computer\C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 HomeCrafter Plus\HCBin, here you will see the Homecrafter.exe
  6. Now go back to your desktop and right click and copy the exe (after unzipping) from your desktop and paste into the HCBin allowing this to overwrite the one there
  7. Now right click the exe you replaced in the HCBin and send a shortcut to desktop.
  8. You can now delete the exe you downloaded from the desktop, just leaving the shortcut. Homecrafter should now run.
