Installing Sims 3 Package Files: Not Working!

If you have tried the instructions to install Sims 3 package files and the suggested test file (Rick's no intro mod) is not working in your game...

Step 1: Double Check!

If you actually follow the steps correctly from start to finish, your custom content WILL work! If it doesn't work, you did something wrong!

Go through the Installing Sims 3 Package Files FAQ again. Double check the following:

Updated?

Is your game updated to the 1.12 patch or later? Verify your game version in the Launcher and update/patch your game if it's not patched!

In Documents - NOT Program Files?

Are you sure you're putting things in the right place? It goes under My Documents - nothing should be under Program Files!

Folder Names Correct?

Double-check the folder names:

  • Under My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\ you should have a folder called "Mods" - big M, little s.
  • Inside that Mods folder (My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\ you should have a folder called "Packages" - big P, little s.

Resource.cfg Name & Location?

Double-check the Resource.cfg file. It should be inside your My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods folder (alongside the Packages folder) and is called Resource.cfg - big R, little e, not "Resources" but "Resource" and it should say .cfg on the end. Make sure you have file extensions showing so you see stuff like .cfg, .package, .rar, and so forth - if you see Resource.cfg on that file but you don't see .whatever on other files, it's probably actually called Resource.cfg.txt - make sure you turn on showing file extension (Identifying File Types section).

Resource.cfg Contents?

Double-double check the Resource.cfg file. It's probably easiest to just delete the one you have and replace it with this one: http://skuld.modthesims.info/Resource.cfg - if the contents of your Resource.cfg are wrong then even if it's named right, it won't work! Both the name and contents of the link just given are correct.

Test File?

Make sure you are using the suggested test file, Rick's No Intro Mod and that you have unzipped it into My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages. It should be the only file in that folder, and once unzipped, it should be called "nointro.package"

Step 2: Delete Cache Files

It can be helpful to delete your cache files, so the game regenerates fresh ones, whenever you've added or removed custom content:

Step 3: Ask for Help

If you have verified the above points in Step 1 and deleted your cache files in Step 2, then the nointro mod (and thus any other .package format content) should be working. But if it's not, maybe you've missed something. In that case, it may be helpful to get another set of eyes looking at your custom content setup to figure out where you've gone wrong.

For this, you will need to post a new thread of your own in the Sims 3 Help Forums on MTS. Note that there is a separate subforum if you are on a Mac.

You MUST include ALL of the following info in your post:

Game Version(s)

If you're using Windows: Find your game version If you're using a Mac: Game Help:Ts3 Patching Find Gameversion#info.plist

Copy and paste the indicated line from the skuversion.txt or info.plist from the following locations, for whichever games you have (adapt as appropriate for OSX):

C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Game\Bin C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 World Adventures\Game\Bin C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 High End Loft Stuff\Game\Bin C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 Ambitions\Game\Bin C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 Fast Lane Stuff\Game\Bin C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 Late Night\Game\Bin

If you are on a 64-bit operating system, then it'll be in "Program Files (x86)" rather than just plain Program Files.

You can fill in this little form with your game versions:

The Sims 3: GameVersion = World Adventures: GameVersion = High End Loft Stuff: GameVersion = Ambitions: GameVersion = Fast Lane Stuffate: GameVersion = Late Night: GameVersion =

Just copy-paste the form into the text of your new post. You can leave any blank that you don't have installed.

Resource.cfg

Open your Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Resource.cfg file in Notepad and copy-paste its contents alongside the form with your game version(s) into the text of your new post.
