If you take a look at these folders you will see that there are files with names such as objects01 and Sims01 in there. The easiest thing to do would be to replace all of these with their fresh versions from the install discs, rather than trying to figure out which one is corrupted. The replacement files are all located alongside the objects.package files, in the compressed.zip file on the relevant disc. Please see the instructions above for details on extracting these files.

My game has blank icons or invisible characters

Problem

The objects.package file may be corrupted. What is the objects.package file? The Objects.package file is a game data file containing information including icons, game objects, some characters and skins. There is an objects.package file for each expansion pack, and each stuff pack too.

If you notice that icons are blank, Maxis characters are invisible, textures are corrupted or any characters have blank faces, the chances are your objects.package file has become corrupted.

There are some bugs (the remote control car, Mrs. Crumplebottom being bitten by a vampire, etc.) that can corrupt that file; although the game patches have fixed many of these problems. If that happens, you need to replace the corrupted file for a fresh copy, taken from your game discs.

Solution

The objects.package file is on your CD in a file called compressed.zip. Note: if you have the DVD version, the objects.package file may not be in a compressed file. It could be in the TSData/Res/Objects folder. Credits to Xercis for this information.

For the Base game, this is on CD #2 (or the DVD if you have the DVD version) Thank you Devange.

For University, this is on CD #1

For Nightlife, this is on CD #2

For Open For Business, this is on CD #1 (the only CD)

For Family Fun Stuff, this is on CD #1 (the only CD) credits to Joni.

For Glamour Life Stuff, this is on CD #1 (the only CD)

For Pets, this is on the DVD or CD #1 credits to Khallayne

You need to open compressed.zip with a program that can handle zip files, and extract from it the objects.package file. It's important that you replace the objects.package from the most recent expansion, if any, that you have installed. To do this, put the file in the location which is appropriate for you:

If you have Pets, copy it from the Pets DVD or CD to Program Files/ EA Games/ The Sims 2 Pets / TSData/ Res/ Objects

If you have Glamour Life Stuff but no Pets, copy it from the Glamour Life Stuff CD to Program Files/ EA Games/ The Sims 2 Glamour Life Stuff / TSData/ Res/ Objects

If you have Family Fun Stuff but no Glamour Life Stuff or Pets, copy it from the Family Fun Stuff CD to Program Files/ EA Games/ The Sims 2 Family Fun Stuff / TSData/ Res/ Objects

If you have Open For Business but no Family Fun Stuff, Glamour Life Stuff or Pets, copy it from the Open For Business CD to Program Files/ EA Games/ The Sims 2 Open For Business/ TSData/ Res/ Objects

If you have Nightlife but no Open For Business, Family Fun Stuff, Glamour Life Stuff or Pets, copy it from the Nightlife CD to Program Files/ EA Games/ The Sims 2 Nightlife/ TSData/ Res/ Objects

If you have University but no Nightlife, Open For Business, Family Fun Stuff, Glamour Life Stuff or Pets, copy it from the University CD to Program Files/ EA Games/ The Sims 2 University/ TSData/ Res/ Objects

If you have just the base game copy it from the TS2 CD or DVD to Program Files/ EA Games/ The Sims 2/ TSData/ Res/ Objects

What can I do if that doesn't work?

There are other files which contain object and skin data, too. They are located in:

For the base game: Program files/ EA Games/ The Sims 2/ TS Data/ Res/ Sims 3D

For University: Program files/ EA Games/ The Sims 2 University/ TS Data/ Res/ 3D

For Nightlife: Program files/ EA Games/ The Sims 2 Nightlife/ TS Data/ Res/ 3D

For Open For Business: Program files/ EA Games/ The Sims 2 Open For Business/ TS Data/ Res/ 3D

For Family Fun Stuff: Program files/ EA Games/ The Sims 2 Family Fun Stuff/ TS Data/ Res/ 3D

For Glamour Life Stuff: Program files/ EA Games/ The Sims 2 Glamour Life Stuff/ TS Data/ Res/ 3D

For Pets: Program files/ EA Games/ The Sims 2 Pets/ TS Data/ Res/ 3D

If you take a look at these folders you will see that there are files with names such as objects01 and Sims01 in there. The easiest thing to do would be to replace all of these with their fresh versions from the install discs, rather than trying to figure out which one is corrupted. Other Information

If you have patched the game you will need to apply the patch again, as the patches also update the objects.package files.
