Having Issues Installing the Seasons Patch

Problem

You try to install the patch for Seasons, but the install fails. The patch program may tell you to reinstall Seasons.

Cause

This problem is caused by certain files in your game having been changed in some way, normally by custom content. When the patcher looks for these files, it finds bad (corrupted) versions of them, and so it can't install the patch. These files are normally graphicsrules.sgr or objects.package.

Solution

There are two ways of fixing this problem. One is quite time-consuming, but simple. This is the option for those who consider themselves computer-clueless: Reinstalling. The other is fairly complex, but it will be quick, too, if you understand what to do. This second option is to Copy the Files from your CD. Here are instructions for both:

Reinstalling

This is the more time-consuming, but simpler, way to fix the issue. If you're pretty sure that your computer smarts aren't up to extracting files directly from the game CD or DVD, then do this!

First, back up your user files!! Using this guide. If you skip this step, you will loose your sims, neighbourhoods, and downloads. Do not skip this step!

Second, go into your Start menu, All Programs, EA Games, The Sims 2 Seasons, and run the uninstall program. Let it do its thing, and when it's finished, pop in your Seasons CD or DVD and reinstall Seasons. Install the patch straight away.

Once you have reinstalled Seasons and the patch is working, restore your user files as described in the Backup guide.

Copying the Files Straight from your CD/DVD

Put your Seasons CD/DVD into the drive, holding down the Shift key to keep the game from autorunning (Note: if you have your game set up not to autorun, you needn't press Shift. If it runs anyway, just close it.). Go into My Computer, right-click the icon for the CD drive, and hit Explore.

Now you need to open 'compressed.zip', using WinRAR. Once you've got that open, find and copy 'objects.package' to Program Files / EA Games / The Sims 2 Seasons / TSData / Res / Objects.

Do the same thing for GraphicsRules.sgr (Note: you must use the GraphicsRules.sgr from TSData / Res / Config inside compressed.zip), copy this file into Program Files / EA Games / The Sims 2 Seasons / TSData / Res / Config.

The patch should now install.
