Imaginary Friends

What Are They?

An imaginary friend as a doll.
Imaginary friends are a feature introduced in the Generations expansion pack. If your sim is lucky enough to be given a "special" doll as a baby, they can have an imaginary friend by their side forever - well, sort of!

Whenever twins are born in your sim family, a mysterious (what was it again?) will give them "toys" - patchwork dolls which automatically appear in the baby's inventory. As babies, of course, your twins can't do much with their dolls: but they can do more and more as the sim - and, at the same time, the doll - grows up.

Your sim will have to keep up a good relationship with his or her imaginary friend, and interact with it a lot; otherwise, the imaginary friend will vanish, or never become truly imaginary in the first place.

If you choose to, you can also make your sim's imaginary friend real, using a potion created with the Chemistry Lab. Imaginary friends who have been made real become a controllable member of the family!

Growing Up...

With Toddlers

ImaginaryFriend-MarchAndDoll.jpg
When your sim kids are toddlers, their future imaginary friends will take the shape of dolls – don't be fooled, it's just a disguise – and this is the point at which you can decide whether you want a fully-fledged imaginary friend or not. Toddlers can play with or sing to their dolls: encourage this to develop a relationship between the kid and the doll, or discourage to force the doll to remain... forever, a doll. But you wouldn't do that, would you?

With Children

Surprise!
Soon after your sim toddler grows up into a child, they'll get a late birthday present. A popup will suggest that you take the doll out of your sim's inventory and put it on the floor, and if you do – surprise, the doll grows up too! This is the point at which the dolls stop being dolls and become real imaginary friends (real imaginary... right?)!

The biggest change is that the doll turns into a sort of sim, which can walk around, interact, and has free will. He or she will only be visible to the child sim whose imaginary friend they are, though – with any other sim selected, you won't be able to see them! Imaginary friends turn back into dolls when their sim friend is asleep, and will usually sleep near their sim's bed.

Sim kids can perform most of the same interactions with their imaginary friends as they can with other sims, including chatting, playing, joking, and so on. This can look rather odd when you have another sim selected!

They can also play with and sing to their imaginary friends while they're in doll form, just like when they were toddlers – but you have to queue up the action while your sim kid is asleep, to catch the doll off its guard. Kids can also play with other children's imaginary friend dolls, even though they can't see them when they're the real thing.

Kids can also order their imaginary friends to go get them a snack, or to clean up after them – with varying degrees of success!

With Teens

When your sim child grows up to be a teen, unless they have been made real, the imaginary friend will return to being just a doll. However, that doll can still be used by other toddlers and children - perhaps it will be reincarnated in a later generation!
