Cannot Place Doors and Windows

Problems

  • Doors and windows won't place on walls.
  • Error: "Must place in center of tile".
  • Objects don't snap to the grid as they should...

Solution

If, when building, you find that furniture, doors, windows and other objects do not snap to the grid as they should, then you probably have the 'snapobjectstogrid' cheat set to off, i.e.: boolProp snapObjectsToGrid false

This allows placement of items in postitions that you would not normally be able to use. Whereas this is fine for decorative objects, it can cause problems in objects such as chairs and windows, which have to be placed correctly to be used by Sims.

To correct this, and allow for normal object placement, bring up the cheat console (CTRL-SHIFT-C) and type the following to deactivate the cheat: boolProp snapObjectsToGrid true

You may also need to turn off the moveObjects cheat if you are trying to place doors or windows on diagonal sections of wall - they will not automatically snap onto those sections of wall, even if you have the snapObjects cheat set to true. To turn off the moveObjects cheat, bring up the cheat console and type: moveObjects off

If you switch the cheats off but then find that your objects will not snap to grid when you restart the game, then you most likely have a userstartup.cheat file with the cheat code in it. To delete the file, or to just remove the snapObjects/moveObjects lines from the file, please see Game Help:Userstartup.cheat.

But if one wants to place diagonal doors, windows, curtains and/or else, may make some diagonal walls and then place them with moveobjects off first. Afterwards, with moveobjects on, drag them to the desired location(s). The first placement on diagonal walls is to signal these objects to switch to their diagonal versions first without interference with the moveobjects on cheat, and then with moveobjects on cheat move the diagonal versions around.
