Cannot Raise Resolution

Q: Why does The Sims 2 run in only 800x600? Can I run in a higher resolution?

A: Some video cards may not support a higher resolution for The Sims 2. However, there are steps you can follow to allow for a higher resolution in the game.

Note: The steps below will alter the original game files for The Sims 2. If you should encounter an error after altering this file you will need to revert to the backup version of the file, or uninstall and reinstall the software.

You will need to edit the To set to a higher resolution:

  • Double-click on My Computer
  • Double-click the Local Disk C:
  • Double-click on Program Files
  • Double-click on EA GAMES
  • Double-click on The Sims 2 Seasons (or The Sims 2 Celebrations)
  • Double-click on TSData
  • Double-click on Res
  • Double-click on Config

Now that you are in the correct folder you will need to create a backup copy of the Graphics Rules.sgr file. This backup copy should be kept in case there is an issue after you have edited this file.

  • Find the file Graphics Rules.sgr and right-click on it
  • Select Copy
  • Right-click on anywhere within the folder that is not on an icon and select Paste
  • This will create a Copy of Graphics Rules.sgr
  • Find the file Graphics Rules.sgr and right-click on it
  • Select Open With.
  • On the next menu, find Notepad and select it
  • Click OK
  • This file will now open in Notepad. You will need to find the line setb forceLowResolution true. Click on the Edit menu.
  • Click on Find
  • Type in forceLowResolution and click Find Next
  • Close the search window
  • Delete the true after forceLowResolution and type in false
  • Click on the File menu
  • Click Save

Once you have saved this, please try the software again.

If you receive an error or crash after editing this file, please navigate to the Config folder (see above) and do the following:

  • Click on the Graphics Rules.sgrfile
  • Hit the delete key to delete this file
  • Right-click on the Copy of Graphics Rules.sgr
  • Select Rename
  • Rename this file to Graphics Rules.sgr

Start the software again, and you will be brought back to its default settings.
