Change Default Resolution

Problem

When installing or reinstalling the game, the default and only resolution option is 800 x 600 which is very small on larger resolution monitors.

Solution

These instructions are for Windows 7 or Windows 10

To give yourself more resolution options, modify the 'Graphics Rules.sgr' file

  • GoTo C:/Program Files/EA GAMES/The Sims 2/TSData/Res/Config/Graphics Rules.sgr
  • Backup the existing file.(Copy it someplace outside the game)
  • Edit the Graphics Rules.sgr file with Notepad.
  • Click <Ctrl> and the <F> key. (find)
  • In the box enter, option ScreenModeResolution to find the correct section.
  • Find the settings for Low, Medium and High.
  • Copy the Medium settings and paste them over the Low settings. This gives the option to start the game at 1024 x 768 and greater options.
  • NOTE: If the GameRule-scr won't save, temporarily save it to your desktop, then copy it to the correct location and use administrator mode to approve the save.
  • Save and exit and start the game.
  • Once the game loads, click Options and Monitor to see the resolution options. Try them out to see which one works best for you.

If you still run XP, then see Game Help:Cannot Raise Resolution
