Sim Content Doesn't Show Up

There's several reasons your sim content might still not be showing up. Sim content is anything you put on a sim:

  • Hair
  • Clothing
  • Accessories
  • Skintones
  • Eyes
  • Makeup
  • Full-Face Makeup
  • Eyebrows
  • Beards and Stubble

Sim Content in SavedSims

Try placing your sim-related content (the stuff listed above) in your SavedSims folder rather than Downloads:

  • If you are using Windows XP, your SavedSims folder is: Documents and Settings\(Current User Account)\My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\SavedSims\
  • If you are on a Mac, the SavedSims folder is: Users\(Current User Account)\Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\SavedSims\
  • If you have Windows Vista, the SavedSims folder is: Users\(Current User Account)\Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\SavedSims\

Make sure your sim related content is not within subfolders under SavedSims if you do so.

To do this, you'll need your sim content separate from other content like walls, floors, objects, etc. - see Game Help:Organizing Custom Content for instructions on how to separate stuff like that.

Broken Body Shop Files?

The following generally will not effect all Sim content you have, but may apply if SOME items are missing.

It's possible that in downloading content, a few of the items you've gotten aren't actually finished files. New creators of sim content often make the mistake of sending distributing unfinished files. They just don't know better, and upload the wrong file.

If a creator uploads the wrong file, you'll have a broken copy that won't work right in your game. If it's clothing, you may see it randomly in hitting the "random sim" button in Create a Sim, but it won't otherwise show up so you can select it to put it on your sim.

Identifying Broken Body Shop Files

Luckily, Delphy has come to the rescue with Delphy's Download Organiser which has a function to check for broken Body Shop files. It will scan your Downloads and find any of these unfinished files and you can then remove them from the game.

What to do next...

If you've got some files that you believe have are broken Body Shop files...

  • If you can look at the tooltip (text that displays when you float your cursor over an item) for items identified as broken Body Shop files by DDO you may be able to identify who made the broken item and go back to where you got it from originally. Then, you can send them a polite message. It's suggested you copy and paste the following text:

I've downloaded your file and noticed that it doesn't show up in the game. A scan with Delphy's Download Organiser identifies it as a broken Body Shop file - one from your Projects folder. When you upload Body Shop items, make sure to click "Import to Game" when you have your project open to have Body Shop pack up the file. Then open the My Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\SavedSims folder, and find the file that contains your project name, prefixed by a random number/letter string. That's the finished file you should share. Please upload the correct file so your project will work for everyone. Thanks!

Until you can download a new file from the creator, it's probably best just to delete any broken Body Shop files from your game.

Pets Broken Body Shop File

The following generally will not effect all Sim content you have, but may apply if SOME items are missing.

If the problem isn't broken Body Shop files, it's also possible that certain files are broken due to a bug with the Pets expansion. The problem, though, effects people who do NOT have the Pets expansion!

Users who have installed the Pets expansion but have not applied the Pets Body Shop patch will create Body Shop files that do not work for people who do not have Pets. Even though Pets does not add any Body Shop content whatsoever, some changes to it caused the files the Pets Body Shop creates to only work for Pets owners.

Identifying Broken Body Shop Files

You know you have files that have the Pets Body Shop bug if:

  • In Create a Sim, you are seeing full-body nude/naked sim thumbnails in place of outfits. These thumbnails may or may not display a proper outfit once clicked on.
  • In Create a Sim, when putting outfits on sims they seem to combine, layering over each other in a generally ugly way.
  • After finishing a family in Create a Sim, they lose the clothing you put them in once you move them into a home.
  • When buying or changing clothing on a lot, you see blank thumbnails instead of outfits.

If you are experiencing some or all of these symptoms, you are likely experiencing the effects of the Pets Body Shop bug.

What to do next...

If you've got some files that you believe have the Pets Body Shop bug...

  • If you can look at the tooltip (text that displays when you float your cursor over an item) for items you suspect were created by Pets Body Shop users, you may be able to identify who made the broken item and go back to where you got it from originally. Then, you can send them a polite message. It's suggested you copy and paste the following text:

I've downloaded your file and noticed that it behaves strangely in the game. Based on information in MTS2's Game Help section, I suspect it may be due to a problem with Pets Body Shop. It has a bug that causes users with Pets to create files that don't work for people who do not have Pets. If you have the Pets expansion and have not installed the Pets Body Shop patch, please do so - then people without Pets can use your files. You can find more information about that, and links to the patch here: http://www.sims2wiki.info/Body_Shop - once you install the patch you'll need to re-import your project in Body Shop and upload the new file. Thank you!

Until you can download a new file from the creator, it's probably best just to delete any broken Pets Body Shop files from your game. Otherwise, you'd need to get the Pets expansion for those items to show up properly.
