Game Help Talk:Installing Sims 3 Package Files/Old
Issues with Custom Installation
- Why not just have the file extracted directly to C:Program files/Electronic Arts/Sims 3 ? It would eliminate one step. User:Kewian 10:54 5 June 2009
- Because people on Vista with their permissions set up badly, which is after all most people on Vista, will receive an error if they try to extract into Program Files.

I have my game installed to another directory - are instructions the same with custom install as well as the default install? I do not have a Sims 3 folder in the directory given in the instructions, or do I have to create one?

- I'd assume it would work if you put it into the folder you installed to - that is, if you installed to Games\TS3, put Resource.cfg in Games\TS3, and put .package files in Games\TS3\Mods\Packages. This should work, I think! curlybap 16:28, 4 June 2009 (CDT)
\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages

- Can I put pattern files into \Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages\Patterns or must they be in \Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages? Also inside the Packages folder, I also have folders called Skins, Misc and Hacks. Can I place Hacks in \Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages\Hacks would they they need to be in \Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Mods\Packages ?
- You can use any subfolder structure you like, up to four levels deep.

Modified Instructions for World Adventures EP
With the installation of the World Adventures EP, I had to move the Mods/Packages folder structure and the Resource.cfg file from C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 to C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 World Adventures. I also had to move d3dx9_31.dll from C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Game\Bin to C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 World Adventures\Game\Bin to get my hacks to work. Perhaps this should be added to the instructions? Thank you!
Won't work
Okay, I have followed these instructions to a T (looked everywhere) and still No custom content. The files (not package files) that you double click on and they install always work but no mods. I have the resource file and the other file you need in the proper places and nothing.
It is like custom content cannot be enabled! (is there something like on the Sims 2 you click to enable custom content).
I am going crazy, reinstalled the game like twice to make sure i didn't mess something up. Anyone have a solution for me!
Mods are in C/program files/electronicarts/thesims3/mods/packages The resource file is in: c/programfiles/electronicarts/thesims3 And the D3Dx9_31.dll file is in there as well!
HELP!!!
My Documents?
There seems to be a really strong warning against putting anything in the My Documents folder, but never is any reason given *why* we shouldn't put things in the My Documents folder (or subfolders). I am in the habit of downloading zipped .package files into the My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Downloads folder, unzipping and installing them from there. Since it doesn't matter where the .package files are, is there some reason I shouldn't be storing them in this folder?

- The warnings are there because if they weren't, there'd be even more posts made in the help forum asking why it doesn't work when the package files are in My Docs/.../Downloads. Speaking of which, talk pages are not the place for questions - those should be asked on the help forums. ;)
